Abstract
This paper seeks to test morphological trends and rates of evolution using both paleontology and biology. Two major morphological trends are observed in the fossil record: morphological stasis and phyletic gradualism. The ‘how often?’ statistical test of the European arvicolid rodent radiation shows (1) that over 5 Ma, 52 lineages appear (FAD) by allopatric speciation, of which 34 die out (LAD) in the same time span; (2) that cumulative phyletic gradualism (diachrons) accounts for around 63 % of evolutionary trends, whereas stasis accounts for only 37%; (3) that morphological changes occur either by phyletic gradualism through successive distinct diachrons (73% of morphological changes) or during punctuations (27% of morphological changes). Thus it is clear that, from a theoretical point of view, the punctuated equilibria model must be complemented by a disequilibria component which includes phyletic gradualism. As phyletic gradualism is partly serial, the punctuated equilibria/disequilibria model can be described by a linear and periodic equation established on the basis of a Plio-Pleistocene Mimomys lineage.
